Sit Down Brunches in Orange County California

After a hard week, whether it is at a job or stressful life experiences, sometimes you just want someone to serve you when you go out for brunch. In Orange County, California there are many wonderful restaurant orange county that do just that-many which are even family-friendly! Here are several worth noting:

In Costa Mesa, these first two are literally within walking distance of one another and it's best to be prepared for a wait. Even though both are located in small strip malls, word has definitely spread about the wonderful food and service.

Plums Cafe is the more "upscale" of these two. The owner hails from Oregon and imports all the berries, pepper-smoked bacon, maple ham, coffee and artwork (all for sale!) from her home state. The menu has wonderful twists on homey comfort food. From the outside, you'd never believe the treasure inside. Thankfully, coffee is available outside and if your stomach growls, the bakery case has plenty of goodies to help tide you over until a table opens up!

The Omelet Parlor is a funky spot with pictures of old Orange County and memorabilia hanging from the walls. The wait staff dresses as if they've received style tips from Cyndi Lauper. All the food is comfort-based and very large portions. It's a fun atmosphere for everyone. Be sure to try the homemade apple butter!

If you like the idea of having breakfast along the coast these next three are great finds:

The Cottage Restaurant in Laguna Beach is practically an institution. Literally housed in an old cottage home, it has the usual breakfast fair, but is a short walk to the beach across the street.

Zinc Cafe and Pacific Whey Baking Company are places where you do have to go up and order, but then the food comes to you. Both have bakery goods to take home with you-trust me, you'll probably want to have some of the homemade items on hand to remember the morning! Zinc Cafe also has a market attached to it and considers themselves to be vegetarian-based. However even my meat-loving husband enjoyed our morning here. Pacific Whey has the one restaurant in Newport Coast, but also has three other units-Newport Beach, Ladera Ranch and a new one in the South Coast Plaza.

Laguna Hills has two popular spots: Mollie's Country Kitchen and the Original Pancake House. Both boast large portions-no lie here! There's enough on most items that my sister and I split several dishes and still couldn't finish. These two spots are very popular, be prepared for a wait on the weekends.
Great for family get-togethers.

Huntington Beach has two spots located in city parks. Alice's in the Park is a little shack that serve's up huge to-die for homemade cinnamon rolls. Because it's tiny, it's lucky the park surrounds it so the kids can play while you wait. Plus, it's great to walk after eating those huge pastries or the egg dishes!

The Park Bench Cafe isn't quite as sit down as the rest of this list, but it is great for a beautiful morning! You get to sit outside and there are usually plenty of "regulars" there to help you out with what's best on the menu.

There you have it-a few of the choices you may have to stand and order, or wait for a seat, but the food, fun and service is worth it once your table opens up!

Have a great weekend. For the best restaurant orange county visit http://restaurantinorange.com

Top Ten Breakfast Places in Orange County, California

My husband and I love to go out to breakfast. We even call it our weekly date. Orange County California has an abundance of different types to fun places to try. There are some that, quite honestly, I would have loved to have tried and included, but didn't quite get the chance. Hopefully I will be able to have another chance to write another article about one of my favorite meals out and include them. For now, here are some of our favorite restaurants to start our day:

Plum's Cafe: Costa Mesa. Located in a strip mall, this place is so popular that even during the weekdays you need to allow for a long wait. But it' well worth it! The owner is an Oregon transplant who brings wonderful produce, coffee and artwork into her establishment. The menu has some very interesting items-my husband loves the coconut french toast, served with tropical fruit. I love the greek omelet. We both have trouble resisting the Oregon boysenberry muffins! My mom says the lamb/feta burgers served with field greens salad is the best. For my father-the dutch baby reigns supreme.

The Omelet Bar: Just a block up from Plum's in yet another strip mall is this rather quirky little place. The wait staff dresses like Cyndi Lauper, but are very good. Lots of very good egg dishes, but good lunch menu also abounds. Lots of old Orange County memorabilia abounds on the wooden walls. The homemade apple butter is really terrific on the english muffins.

Las Brisas: Laguna Beach. Honestly, for us the food is highly over-rated, but the view of the Pacific is what makes this place a destination spot. Plus you can walk the beach trails and shop all over the city, providing you find a parking space!

The Cottage: Laguna Beach. Another local classic spot. Literally a cottage. Sometimes, this place has a dicey reputation, but all the same, it somehow remains a must try spot for vacationers.

Cafe Zinc: Laguna Beach. For the most part-vegetarian, but food is hearty enough that even a meat-lover like my husband doesn't mind starting out the day here. Also has a cute little market attached to it, so you can try out a few of their goodies at home.

All the Ruby's diners: It's a chain, but popular with families. What can I say? Even my infant grandson loves the noise and the trains, planes, bikes (depending on the unit) and cars that glide on tracks along the ceiling.

Alice's in the Park: Central Park in Huntington Beach. If you love tiny little family run places and huge out-of-this-world cinnamon rolls-you have to go to Alice's. Believe me, you will need to walk the park several times to walk off the calories, but the place is terrific and worth every bite.

Cafe Neff: Laguna Niguel Design Center. Only open during this To The Trade areas hours of operation, but it's staff and food is a favorite, not only with the designers and their clients, but with anyone who wants to do a more relaxed version of "the ladies who lunch", plus I've never had anything but absolutely delicious food. They have daily specials and scones of the morning. Maple bacon aroma is too die for! Coffee is quite good.

Ted's Burgers: Just across the street from Cafe Neff in a strip mall, Ted's is a local hangout. Everyone from families, to biker's, senior citizens and law enforcement loves Ted's breakfasts. Nothing to look at, but it's all comfort food based. Portions are so large that even my husband doesn't mind sharing a meal with me!

Pacific Whey Baking Company: four locations. Trendy, but excellent breakfasts and bakery choices. We love to share and ABC omelet and a chocolate pinwheel. While they do have an interesting lunch and dinner menu-trust me, stick to breakfast and desserts.

Corner Bakery: again, it's a chain, but good food and choices. The outdoor seating at most locations make it perfect for one of our typical sunny California mornings. Ours is close enough and allows pooches on the patio, so we take our labrador mix for a walk there and back!

Hopefully, if you live close by you'll seek out some of these breakfast treasures. And if you visit in the future, you look them up and give them a try

The Top Ten Romantic Restaurants in Orange County, California

There is no shortage of places to eat in Orange County, California. Romance abounds with the cliff side views of the Pacific Ocean on one half of the county and the hills and valleys on the other half. Depending on your budget and individual preferences there are so many to chose one that I had a very hard time pinning down the ten here. According to the Gayot restaurant guide,  and a personal polling of 20 long-time residents of the area here are the ones that "made the grade" as places to go when you want romance to fill the air (they are in random order):

Starting with the "inland" choices:

Anaheim White House-an institution in Anaheim. Northern Italian cuisine is combined with French touches in an actual white house in very elegant decor.

Orange Hill Restaurant-in the city of Orange. The restaurant has been host to numerous weddings, anniversary celebrations and proposals. The cuisine in American. The restaurant and bar overlook the sweeping valley below. The lights of the cities in the distance are incredible. So high on the romance charts, I even suggested to my sister that this would be the perfect spot for her wedding. The food is excellent, but the guests seem to wander over to the windows to enjoy the view as much as the catered reception.

Golden Truffle-Costa Mesa. While the restaurant doesn't have any views and resides on a major street, what makes this restaurant special is the willingness of the chef and his staff to personally cook up some of the county's most exotic cuisine and serve it in an un-intrusive way.

Cedar Creek Inn-San Juan Capistrano. This restaurant is in the old town area, right across the street from the Mission. Again, no view perse but the patio lights and the ease of taking a stroll through the quaint city and shop in the anitque shops is worth it. The cuisine is Californian.

Five Crowns-Corona Del Mar. The main element to this extremely well known eatery is that it is an exact replica of England's oldest inn. The Lawry's owned restaurant serves American dishes, but the waitstaff serves you in period English dress and manners. Obviously, if you chose here, eat the steak ribs.

The Ritz Restaurant and Garden-Newport Beach. Continental cuisine served by a wonderful wait staff that want to make sure that whatever you are celebrating becomes special. Our son sent my husband and I here for our 23rd anniversary. He had taken his girlfriend and was not only impressed by the terrific food, but that the service was quiet, attentive and respectful (some eateries are not so with couples who are 20-somethings).

The remaining restaurants all have sweeping Pacific Ocean views. Except for Las Brisas which serves Mexican fare, the all serve American cuisine.

Las Brisas-Laguna Beach. Best bet, stick with the seafood. This restaurant has been around a long time. While the food may not really be up to the same standards as the rest of the choices listed, the view and usually the service are what keep this place on the "romantic" map.

The Chart House-Dana Point. Many the wedding and reception has taken place here. Even wanted to add our own daughter's to the list. When we want a very romantic evening, this is where my husband and I go. The food is excellent, the staff professional and while you wait (and you will)you can enjoy a stroll in the "backyard" or just sit outside with a glass of wine.

Cannons-Dana Point. Plenty of directions to crane your neck at the view up here. I prefer brunch on a spring or summer Sunday, but of the long-time residents I interviewed, they're sold on this hotspot for a special evening out.

Salt Creek Inn-considered Laguna Niguel. Different and eclectic. Service can be spotty, but the younger crowd I talked to seem to really enjoy eating here.

These were the chosen few, but I would be remiss not to mention if time and budget allow, try eating at any of the venues at the Laguna Beach Montage Hotel. The hotel is romance personified, the grounds are beautiful, the menus varied (alas a little steep for my budget)and sound delicious. Those who had eaten there couldn't stop raving about how delicious every was and how beautifully it was served. One gentleman took his wife of 30 years there to celebrate their anniversary and the staff helped "hide" her pearl necklace in a specially made dessert!

Now all anyone needs to do is put on the dress up togs and come and visit-during dinner! Oh and reservations are suggested!
